What is blockchain?

Blockchain is a tamper-proof, decentralized ledger that establishes a level of trust necessary for the exchange of value without the use of intermediaries. Blockchain can keep track of anything of value: money, food, real estate, art, stocks, plane tickets, and medical records, to name a few.

It can be used to record and provide proof of any transaction and is updated every time a transaction occurs. It is the system of record—the single source of truth shared by all transaction participants—and its transactions are authenticated and verifiable.

What functionality does blockchain-in-a-box provide?

The main functions of this solution include:

  • Role based access to authorize and authenticate users within the permissioned blockchain platform
  • Application building blocks to speed up the blockchain application development by reusing proven code and libraries
  • Digital asset management to digitize your assets e.g. using security tokens or utility tokens
  • Business logic in smart contracts to program the conditions under which a transaction will take place
  • Business transactions ledgerto register transactions using advanced cryptography which helps to ensure the transactions are authenticated and verifiable
  • Logging and monitoringto managing the blockchain platform and ensure the agreed service levels

What is blockchain-in-a-box used for? 

The blockchain platform can be used for proof of concepts, prototypes, pilots and production purposes. There are two main platform flavors (see figure below):

  • BIAB for exploration – for evaluation and experimentation purposes, providing performance up to 10.000 transactions / second, application deployment in minutes and a distributed ledger that is copied across all blockchain nodes
  • BIAB for production – for pilot and production purposes, providing enterprise grade functions, such as data deduplication & compression, (auto) scaling of containers & virtual machines, add / replace node hardware with zero downtime, built-in resiliency, backup & disaster recovery and RTOs and RPOs in minutes.

What does blockchain-in-a-box consist of?

The architecture is simple and straightforward, bringing together three existing products that have proven themselves individually and are now tightly integrated in BIAB:
